[October 29th, 2002] THE RETURN OF EPITAH

The German-British rock band "Epitaph" were founded in 1969 in Dortmund (Germany), and for some time they lived in the respected German rock city Hannover. They were the first German rock band to play live in the USA back in 1973, and during the seventies they toured with bands like Nektar, Omega, Rory Gallagher, Golden Earring and many more. Altogether they have performed their own show on more than 1.200 Live-Concerts around the world, including the important "Rockpalast" TV-concert in German Television.

AOR fans might be more familiar with Kingdom (changed to Domain later), which was founded by Epitah's Cliff Jackson and Bernd Kolbe in 1986. Jackson and Kolbe played a big part on the first Domain albums.

In the new Century Epitaph have had some successful Reunion-Concerts and are about to release a new Live-CD taken from these acts. At the moment the band have written new songs and they are occupied with the studio-recording. The release-date for the new disc will be in March/April 2003. After that Epitaph will give many Live-Concerts in Europe and later some shows in the U.S.

[October 29th, 2002]PROG-TASTIC DVS RECORDS NEWS

Some news courtesy of DVS Records, Holland...

** RE-RELEASE DEBUT CD HEAVEN'S CRY **
During their short European tour (Heaven's Cry played at ProgPower and a few gigs together with Threshold and the reactions were very positive), we discussed a lot of things with the band about the future between DVS and Heaven's Cry. It looks like both parties will go for a longtime relationship, so far everything fits together perfectly. One of the things we have decided is that DVS will re-release the debutCD "Food For Thought Substitude" around June 2003. The band will re-mix and re-master the whole stuff, new artwork will be made and we probably will add 1 or 2 bonustracks to the album, to make it different from the original release. Besides this DVS and Heaven's Cry made already some plans for the third release from the band for early 2004. So this time we definitely do not have to wait another 6 years (the time between the first 2 releases of the band)!

** ALIAS EYE ARE RECORDING THEIR SECOND CD **
German artrock band Alias Eye have started the recordings for their second CD. According to the band they will experiment a little bit during the recording sessions so we can definitely expect some huge surprises. The album is scheduled to be released in Oktober 2003.

** PRE-PROMOTION CHROME SHIFT CD WILL START SOON **
In a few weeks we will start with the pre-promotion for our next release, the debut CD by Danish progressive metal surprise Chrome Shift. Metalized Magazine, the biggest metal magazine in Denmark, told us that we can be very happy with this band, to them it is one of the best Danish newcomers around. Solid progressive metal with and excellent singer, that is what you can expect. Right now the album is mixed and soon it will be mastered, Mattias Noren from Sweden will do the artwork so once again expect a fine package. The album will be out in Europe in February 2003, we are now negotiating some deals for the rest of the world.

** WEBSITE UPDATED WITH AN ORDER PAGE **
We have updated the website a little bit with all the latest information and news, including an order page. People will be able to order the CDs directly though DVS from now on, we even added a page where people can pay by credit card using PayPal. So check it out!

Support comes from John Mitchell and his other band The Urbane.

JY is well known for his work playing keyboards for such stadium rockers as The Scorpions, Asia and Bonnie Tyler as well as the reformed 70's progressive group Greenslade, Fish (ex Marillion) and Qango and as such spends much of his time playing overseas.

In recent years he has concentrated on a growing solo following thanks to his first highly acclaimed release 'Life Underground' and the brand new CD 'Significance'. John works hard in an industry dominated by teen culture to redress the balance and if you would care for an evening of well-crafted and meaningful songs then look no further. From the emotional ballads, and thought provoking pieces through to the raw power of 'Kings' and the sheer musicality of the 'Unknown Soldier' all 14 minutes of it!

As one A&R guy in the USA once said to John 'If good chords, brilliant melodies and great lyrics ever come back into fashion John... you'll be the first to know!'

Come and see what the fuss is about and add your voice to the growing call for real music!

Full details and 90 second music samples are available from http://youngjohn.co.uk

[18 October 2002] ADRIANGALE SET FOR THEIR FIRST FULL SCALE EURO RELEASE

As the release of Adriangales first ever official European release draws nearer, lead guitarist Vic Rivera takes us through the album step by step, and if that wasn't enough Z Records have allowed a full mp3 download of the track "Closer" at www.zrecords.net

The albums release has been slightly rescheduled and is now set at November 11th 2002

Still Burning
This song is best described as our blunt little memo to the major record companies (and the bandwagon listeners) who abandoned melodic hard rock - we’re still here and we’re still going strong despite your lack of support, thank you very much………..ignore at your own risk.

Closer
This one fell together really nicely. I had the music, vocal melodies, and chorus. Enter Jaime Rowe to add his very special brand of magic lyric treatment. PRESTO. Instant feel-good anthem. Would have been the song of the summer if released in Melodic Rock’s heyday - and COULD be a song of freedom for the working-class stiffs who still love good rock music!

Heartbreak Guaranteed
This was the first one I came up with for this album and is very likely the most aggressive tune I’ve ever written. Hit you over the head with the meanest riffs possible - then pull you in with the melodic hook of the chorus. Add in a very inspired solo from Eddie - who says negativity can’t be channeled into something positive?

If
Inspired by a lot of Diane Warren. I love the way she effortlessly modulates her ballads. This is my attempt to incorporate her style into my own. Jaime’s delivery really makes you feel this one right where it counts. One of his most heartfelt vocal performances in AdrianGale to date - pure emotion.

Over, Said and Done!
This one sort of just fell into my hands one day - had the riff in my head, picked up the guitar, kicked it up a notch and BAM - over, said and done. Pun intended!

Runaway
Jaime submitted this song to Kivel for inclusion on the album. I did not need to do much with this at all - Jaime just about wrote it perfectly. Just slightly tweaked the guitar parts and left everything else alone - not a lot to do when it’s great the way it is!

Heartgames
As far as songwriting goes, this one is one of the more progressive songs I have come up with. It started with a fairly simple riff, but it quickly blossomed as I was working on it, became way more complex and layered before I knew it and the result is what you now hear. Dare I say it - the songwriting is much more mature here (gasp - heaven forbid THAT should become a habit), but didn’t lose sight of the fun and melodic elements!

41394/Part of Me
OK, this one is special. The day Jaime was slated to begin his vocal work, before I could hook up with the gang at the studio I had to visit my son Jesse, who I had not seen for almost a month owing to various circumstances beyond my control. When I saw him, it was an extremely emotional moment for both of us. Later that evening, I relayed the experience to Jaime when he stayed at my place that evening to collaborate on additional lyrics. The next afternoon we were working on a song to which I had the music, but no lyrics, and I gave it to Jaime to work on. As I was playing the music on an acoustic guitar, he’s singing back to me these lyrics that almost completely mirrored the previous night’s discussion. As we concluded our work, Jaime looked at me with a smile and said, “There ya go - that’s for Jesse.” To say I was touched beyond words is an understatement. Unbeknownst to Jaime or myself, Kivel was taping the whole process, which we named 41394 and used as the intro to PART OF ME- and now you have the finished product.
Though inspired by my son, Jaime’s lyrics are so well written that this song applies to ANY child (including Jaime’s kids Christian, Kaitlyn and Madelyn) and this will hopefully be something loving parents everywhere can dedicate to their children.

Heather Please
This was the first tune I specifically wrote for Jaime to take total command of the lyrics. And oh boy - he didn’t disappoint. The man has a way with melodies, what else can I say? All the more sweet that this song is his love letter to his wife…

No More Chances
Straight ahead melodic hard rock. Tough as nails but catchy as hell.

Stealin Hearts ; bonus track
This is a hold over from the FEELTHE FIRE sessions.... We felt we had the ten for the disk, and put this one on the back burner for later use...now you have it! This is yet another "unashamedmelodicrocksingalongchorusandgetcrazyinyourcardoing105mph!" The bridge reflects the past year of AG being on the melodicrock scene.

[12 October 2002] CYBERDREAMS TRACK BY TRACK

You've already heard plenty about the upcoming Westworld. Now here are some comments from Tony Harnell.

Cyberdreamer
That was one of the last songs we wrote. We sort of decided we needed something big, heavy and epic sounding. They funny thing about it is every once and a while on an album I write a riff and Mark seems to like every riff I write so maybe I should write more riffs…but I sort of came up with that chorus riff. When we first played it in the rehearsal studio I thought it sounded like Accept for some reason. It had that marching German thing, something off 'Balls to the Walls' or something. We got into the recording and laid everything down and had put that song off to last. What I do is put all the melodies together and I work it out with the guys.

When I Come Home
Again one of the last songs that we wrote for the record and Bruno had a hand in the writing of that one. We just said we need something up tempo. So that one just kind of popped out. I think I came up first with that verse riff thing and then we wrote it in the studio. Lyrically I think it's another song that's about a guy trying to basically get back to himself, get back to who he really is. In the chorus I'm saying looking out from where I stand on the edge of where I'll be. It's kind of a searching song.

How Good It Feels
Nothing but love songs baby! I think that song is basically without any doubt an ode to my lady from my heart.

Million Miles
I really love this song. It's probably one of my most favorite songs on the album. To me it almost sounds Journey-ish or something. I can't really put my finger on it. There's something about the verse melody that's very haunting and then you get to the chorus and it's almost like a happy melody but the lyrics are saying this is not how it should be. It's kind of an interesting rubbing of ideas.

What If
I think when I listen to the whole album it could almost be a concept album. There's a theme that runs through the whole thing and I think it's "let's get this shit together on this planet cause we're really fucking things up here".

Look To See
'What if' is almost like a heavy ballad you know, this is a piano ballad. Yeah I really love that song a lot and I'm always a sucker for a ballad. I like to sing them. I think the song is pretty self-explanatory. That song actually started off as a guitar song and Mark had a guitar riff but we just decided let's do something with piano. Josh has become a full member of the band now and we just decided to really utilize that, the piano skills that he has.

Righteous One
Thank you. I got pissed off on the song; it's my one angry song. I can't really say who it's about but it's about someone really close to me. It's not my current girl or ex. It's just a person in my life and they'll get the message. I don't even remember how that song came together musically. Mark was coming up with all these really cool 70's retro riffs. You kind of get that with this song. It's got that old fashioned I don't even know say Aerosmith meets Zeppelin.

Misery Loves Company
Lyrically it's about not going along with the crowd here to find my way out of whatever hellish situation I am in or the world is in. It is a lot about me, a lot of lyrics I definitely write from the heart. I'm not really a storywriter per se. I think 'Cyberdreamer' is about the closest I've done to a story. It's just however I was feeling the day I wrote that song.

I Can't Run
That's a pretty obvious message there. When you are facing your own demons you can either succumb and completely go all the way to the bottom into the gutter and feel like shit and fall apart. The idea behind the song is that you can't run from yourself. I think it's a real realization for some people when they come to terms to the fact that they can't blame other people for their own problems. I actually wrote that song. It's almost entirely my song, Mark cleaned up a little bit here and there but I pretty much brought that to the table.

Neon Nights
Yeah, For some reason 'Westworld' always seems to be a mid-tempo band. We decided that we wanted to do a cover. We tossed around a lot of different ideas and it was kind of hard to get everybody to agree. Finally we agreed on that one. I really don't know how or why that came about but I do know we were getting tired of arguing about it. I love Dio so I thought it would be fun to sing it.

[12 October 2002] LION'S SHARE NEWS

Acclaimed Swedish melodic metal act LION'S SHARE have parted ways with Pontus Egberg (bass) and Johan Koleberg (drums) due to personal differences. Lars Chriss (guitar) and Tony Niva (vocals) will continue writing and demoing material for the group's fifth studio album, to be released sometime in late 2003 or early 2004. More information, including samples of the band's previous work, can be obtained via the group's official web site at www.lionsshare.org

In related news, COSMIC SPHERE, which features in its ranks Lars Chriss, guitarist Antti Wirman (WARMEN, CRAYDAWN), bassist Tapio Oksanen (CRAYDAWN), drummer Kristian Enqvist (ex-RISING FAITH), and an American vocalist presently known only as "Shawn", are in the process of recording a two-song demo, the drum tracks for which were completed last month at KING DIAMOND guitarist Andy LaRocque's Los Angered Recordings studio outside Gothenburg, Sweden. Playing a musical style described as "heavy, energetic and melodic metal in the vein of IN FLAMES/SOILWORK," the group will be demoing more material in the weeks to come with a view towards releasing their debut album sometime in 2003.

In other related news, Chriss' TYKOON project, which he co-founded with guitarist Tommy Denander, are preparing to get back into songwriting mode over the course of the coming weeks. Plans still exist for the band - which also includes former GLORY/LION'S SHARE bassist Andy Loos - to participate in an upcoming KISS tribute CD containing only Unmasked-era songs, to which they will contribute a version of "Easy As It Seems".

[1 October 2002] SHIVA TRACK-BY-TRACK

Shiva's Guitarist/songwriter Mats Edstrom talks about the songs on the debut album at Z Records. Release date November !!! Make also sure to check out the small interview we did with Shiva earlier this year: click here for more background info about the band.

1. Marilyn - It’s a song I wrote long back ago. It was intended to be an “ARROW”-song, but we broke up that time. And of course, it's about Marilyn Monroe.

2. Stay out - Be yourself, don’t listen to the establishment. I feel that it’s the statement-sound of SHIVA. Let’s kick some ass!!

3. Dow Jones Index - We recorded that song 10th September 2001. It was a little bit scary, not because it’s about World Trade Centre, but we felt like that then. It’s a song about power and corruption in the market-economy. Some people use their power to the limit.

4. Another Mans Wife - I asked Anette to finish the lyrics, and the result must be that she’s dreaming of another man. I don’t know. Thou’ I’m very happy how the song turned out. I think it’s how SHIVA should be sounding in the future.

5. Would You Lie To Me - Would you lie to me is a song I wrote with RENEGADE’s Billengren. You can also find it at the album ‘RENEGADE III’. I think it’s a great hardrocking song.

6. Free My Soul - What can I say! Motorcycles and Heavy Metal…….. Are you ready to rock!!!!!

7. Shame On You - A dedication to all you Hard Rocking people all over the world, that understands what music is all about. Could also be use as a strip-tease-background song.

8. One More Day - A song about someone you love that has has passed away.

9. Lead You On - Love and hate between men and women. I think it’s more love than hate, that’s for sure in this song anyway.

10. Right On Time - More love, but with a touch of silicon, sex and leather.

11. No Place For The Living - It’s an idea I came up with when I saw the video-film “Harryson’s flower”. It describe the war in former Yugoslavia. When war shows its real face. It’s one of the favourite-song both to Anette and me.
